So we're currently prepping our next two Baltimore weekends. We have a lot of ideas, some solidified, some not. All are weird when comparing to anything we've done previously, which is a good thing.

Other than that, I'm getting back into coding a bit as of late. Working in C++ with game programming and messing with the arduino board to create experimental LFOs to control functions in effects pedals. Pretty interesting and instantly gratifying stuff, as it doesn't take much to come up with some random math values and listen to see what sort of waveform it generates.

I think the next electronics project will be an analog VCF for my guitar using a couple LM13600's and programming the arduino to have multiple waveform choices for LFOs, as well as the usual envelope follower. Maybe I'll even write LCD output code for it. But probably not because I'm lazy.

If you've read this far, then you and I have similar interests, and everyone else can go fuck themselves.

yes yes yes, fun times are at hand. We're currently working on a number of tracks, and have at least 3-4 songs done or nearly complete....entering a somewhat experimental phase once again with sounds and instruments and progressions. Should be interesting, or terrible. Either way, different than anything we've done for sure.

Finally got the soundlab tuned up right. The SH-101 I'm using to send CV information was the culprit. Turns out that these things have faulty on/off switches that when bumped into, causes the whole thing to go out of tune. Unfortunately, I had tuned it on three separate occasions while it was not tracking the notes properly. This time, I checked the tuning of the SH-101 first, then tuned the Soundlab.

Running both of these keyboards at the same time is quite impressive sounding. I can't wait to use it on something now.

The deed is done... Our room is now complete. Now it's just a matter of recording some sounds in it. Very happy right now...

So...I was thinking about the natural progression in writing we've made both as a band and as individuals, and about all the different styles and sounds we've explored and exploited, and it's pretty interesting to see where we've ended up. I never would have thought 6 years ago I'd go from heavy interest in more complex type music (not prog rock, but musically complex) to absolute minimalist ambient work. I'm not sure if it is more of a maturing or that I've just gotten bored of trying to stuff as many chords/notes as possible into a single song. But I've almost completely lost interest in more complex music and am instead drawn to the feel and mood of the tone and timber of the sound created.

In a way, for an absolute control freak/tweaker like myself in the post-production phase of creating music, minimalist type music actually creates a broader palette to work with than something more complex due to the fact that you cannot drift your focus onto other instruments/passages. A perfect example of what I'm referring to would be Aphex Twin's "Stone in Focus" from Ambient works disc II or some of the stuff Brian Eno did in the 80's. Subtle differences and changes feel like tsunamis when there is less musically going on.
